Proposal for Summit County Properties

North Coast Community Homes (NCCH), in partnership with Community Support Services, the agency that provides support for NCCH tenants with mental illness, has made a proposal to the Alcohol, Drug Addiction & Mental Health Services Board of Summit County (ADM Board) to improve the upkeep of NCCH properties and the lifestyles of our Summit County tenants.

People with mental illness typically live independently in an apartment unit. Many of the tenants for whom NCCH provides housing have had the dual complication of being homeless for a time in their lives. Due to the vagaries caused by homeless living and mental health in general, many NCCH tenants give our properties extremely hard usage. In most cases, when a tenant moves out, his or her apartment may require a complete and costly renovation before it can be rented to the next tenant.

The proposal given to the ADM Board suggests the hiring of two full time staff members by North Coast Community Homes to help support all our properties in Summit County. This support would include cleaning and maintenance responsibilities, as well as being available as other needs arise.

A similar program has already been put in place in NCCH’s 20-unit apartment building in Akron, where 2 people working for Community Support Services are in the building 5 days a week between 1 to 4 p.m. The presence and support of these staff members has helped to give the tenants a feeling of greater security and stability, while at the same time creating a cleaner and better maintained living environment.
